42 Rue Victor Hugo', Carcassonne, France.
'42 Rue Victor Hugo' is a real find. An exquisite blend of contemporary glamour and indulgence, with the rich history and culture of the breathtakingly beautiful medieval town of Carcassonne. The interiors have that rare quality of being both minimalist, yet sumptuous. The clean lines of the walls, huge windows and furnishings are accented with objet d'arte and pretty textured throws and cushions to create an environment that is a romantic and cosy as it is stylish and glamorous. Luxury touches like the flat screen TV, IPOD dock (loaded IPOD available) and fully-stocked 'mini kitchen' (like a mini-bar but bigger!) would be the icing on the cake, were it not for the fantastically well-thought out extras included in the 'Le Weekend' package created by the apartment's British owners. From complimentary airport transfers to ensure a stress-free arrival, to first-night cocktails and canapés to make a week's work fade away, a delicious 3-course dinner one night and a pre-booked reservation at a restaurant hand-picked to match guest's preferences - be they for Michelin-star glitz or a table for two in a romantic candlelit garden - the next, the result is a three night break that’s at least as relaxing as a week’s holiday.

The apartment is more like a glorious self-contained suite. It’s huge at over 50square metres and boasts a large salon (living room) with four metre high ceilings, floor to ceiling windows, an original marble fireplace and a cleverly concealed mini-kitchen with oven, hob and fridge, which comes fully stocked with wine, beer, nibbles and soft drinks. There's also a DVD player and flat screen for watching movies and an IPOD dock (loaded IPOD available on loan for those who don't have their own). The separate bedroom has a king-sized bed and a small but elegantly formed en-suite with a luxurious walk-in shower.
Carcassonne is home to not one but two UNESCO world heritage sites, the most famous of which is the incredibly well-preserved and beautiful medieval walled town or 'La Cite', just 15 minutes walk from the apartment. The second is 'Le Canal du Midi'. Borrow a bike and cycle along the tow paths, or take a picnic and stroll along the banks of the beautiful river Aude and simply breathe in the scenery and history. Foodies should not miss a trip to 'Les Halles' the newly refurbished meat and fish market (apartment owners Debrah and Peter will guide you to the best Charcuterie. Plus the bustling Saturday morning market in the Place Carnot - grab a table and a coffee and simply watch the locals haggle over the fruit, flowers and vegetables. For a bit of affordable interiors inspiration and a delicious cake, try the Intherieur 13 boutique and tea rooms on Rue Chartran. To really 'drink-in' the city take root for a few hours on the terrace of Bar à Vins on rue Plô and use the fact Carcassonne is surrounded by five AOC wine producing regions as an excuse to sample them all: Carbardes, Minervois, Corbieres, Limoux and Cotes du Malepere. Pick Debrah and Peter's brains for more recent 'finds'.
