West Axnoller, near Beaminster, Dorset.
Burggraaf may be near England's famous 'Jurassic Coast' but there's nothing old fashioned about its striking architecture, contemporary interior design and thoroughly luxurious fixtures and fittings. Renting it with a group of up to 12 friends or family is probably as close as it gets to the rock’n’roll dream of hiring a boutique hotel for exclusive use. In fact, it may be even better as most boutique hotels can’t boast of their own indoor heated pool, sauna and cedar hot tub with glorious views over open countryside.
Inside the living area is flooded with light from its huge glazed entrance hall and high cathedral-style ceiling. Its focal point is a magnificent contemporary fireplace with ribbon fire. The building’s elegant proportions are complemented by statement wallpaper and tasteful contemporary furniture, striking objet d’art and splashes of Indian-inspired jewel colours in the form of beautiful silk scatter cushions and lampshades
The six spacious bedrooms each have flat screen TVs, sumptuous linen and super king beds (convertible to twins), plus decadent en-suite bathrooms, with baths as well as showers and indulgent Aromatherapy Associates products.
Outside, there’s a choice of two elegant gardens one of which is a private enclosed courtyard complete with cedar hot tub and furniture for al fresco dining plus a gas barbecue and patio heaters – ideal for long pleasurable evenings catching up on the days events and taking in the beautiful views.
Along with the beautiful Roman bath style pool, sauna, hot tub and feature fireplace, Burggraaf also boasts a gym, games room, 42” plasma screen, Sky TV, Nintendo Wii (brilliant for family/hen break bonding purposes), free wireless broadband access, and a treatment room which can be used when pre-booking from a long list of available massage and beauty treatments. For somewhere so elegant, Burggraaf is surprisingly family-friendly too with plenty equipment for toddlers and babies supplied. Its fair to say that parents of tiny tearaways might feel more comfortable if they’ve ensured the silk cushions and Objets d’Art are placed out of reach before letting them loose! The pool is certainly warm enough for mini guests being heated to comfortable 29 degrees.
There’s also a long list of pre-bookable extras that can be arranged to make a stay even more indulgent. These including a brilliant private chef service with a selection of mouth-watering menus from £20-£25 per head (waiting staff extra), a delicious home-made ready meal delivery service, and a range of spa and beauty treatments. Babysitting can also be arranged to allow guests to sample one of the many excellent restaurants nearby or participate in a group activity day.
Guests of Voltaire and Burgraaf, will eat well West Dorset - its Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall country after all! You can hardly move for fresh local produce beautifully prepared with a profusion of restaurants and gastro-pubs in the area. Sawmill Café, Le Petit Canard Restaurant, Little Barwick House, Kempsters Restaurant, The Anchor Inn (for shellfish) and the Riverside Restaurant at West Bay, are all highly recommended. The Winyards Gap Inn at Cheddington is a lovely 45-minute walk from the properties. For shopping, try nearby Bridport, which has a weekly open market which selling local produce. It’s also a good spot to catch live music.
For those who enjoy working up an appetite, there are plenty of options from the simple pleasures of country walks, woodland trails and exploring the area's many beautiful beaches to horse riding, golf, clay pigeon shooting and quad biking.
Burggraaf sleeps 12 (plus cots) in six en-suite bedrooms, all of which can be configured as twins or super king-sized doubles. Rental rates are from just £42 - £72 pp per night depending on the time of year and length of stay. Minimum price is £2,250 for a short break to £6,000 for a week including Christmas or New Year. Peak summer rates are £5,500 per week. Larger groups may rent the similarly stylish 'Voltaire' which is neighbouring but not overlooking and also sleeps 12.
