'Court Farm Standerwick', Standerwick, Near Bath, Somerset, England.
This funky farm cottage and luxurious B&B suite (each sleep 2-4) may benefit from the charm and character of their 16th century heritage on the outside but are brimming with cosy contemporary style and luxury inside. They share a gorgeous rural setting on a 10-acre smallholding with views over a courtyard of filled with pear and fig trees to meadows beyond. Yet, they are only 20 minutes from the Georgian splendour and fabulous shopping of Bath. The two bedroom cottage is completely self-contained but linked to the main farmhouse via a connecting door into a large dining room, that can be booked, along with the Attic Suite, which is part of the main farmhouse, for larger groups wishing to socialise together, although with their own private bedrooms and living rooms (the Attic Suite's second room can be used as a bedroom or sitting room).
The Attic Suite in the main farmhouse may be a little less private than staying in the cottage but it is delightfully designed with a magnificent bed, its own sitting room/second bedroom and a bathroom, with candles and a double-ended bath, that practically begs to be shared. Like the cottage, the suite's bathroom comes complete with Cowshed products, huge soft towels and cosy bathrobes, whilst its bed(s) are made up with the kind of high quality linens that make it almost impossible to get up in the morning. Although, the promise of having a delicious, mostly organic, farmhouse breakfast made for you (£14.50) pften provides the impetus required.
The two-bedroom self-contained cottage's original beamed ceilings and wide oak floor boards give it wonderful character but its the luxury touches that make it a perfect bolthole. From the underfloor heating beneath polished stone floors (downstairs), to the Bang & Olufsen TV (with full SKY), DVD player, IPOD dock, fully geared up kitchen and elegant Danish log burner, to the games room complete with table tennis, table football and Ninetendo Wii.
Additional indulgence is offered in the form of private chef services, gourmet hampers and treatments by a qualified mobile massage and beauty therapist who specialising in La Stone therapy.
Bath is just 20 minutes away and brilliant for all kind of indulgence be it a trip to the fabulous Thermae Spa with its natural hot spa pool on a rooftop looking over Bath and the surrounding countryside, treatments ranging from aromatherapy cocoons and Moroccan mud wraps to shiatsu and reiki. For shopping, there's Jolly's, one of the UK's oldest department stores, or the little independent boutiques of Walcot Street and Shires Yard. The latter has a great Alessi Gallery for those who can't resist snapping up funky Italian interiors goodies. Austen fans should make a point of visiting the Queen Street centre dedicated to the author and in particular its Regency Tearooms. A must for chocoholics is The House of Minerva, the UK's only licensed chocolate shop where you can watch fresh truffles made and enjoy the results with a glass of Champagne. Foodies should also be sure to try Michelin star dining at the Bath Priory. Closer to 'home' is the picture-perfect market town of Frome which has some great bistros and boutiques to discover.
