Gothic Villa, Ferryside, Carmarthenshire, Wales.
Gothic Villa is a lovingly restored detached 19th century self-catering villa with a big welcome, in the heart of the estuary village of Ferryside, one of West Wales best kept secrets, and where life has a different pace. It offers the very best of traditional and contemporary, in design, furnishings and art mixed together to create one of those very special finds that you’ll want to come back to time and time again at any time of the year.
The four bedrooms (two doubles, a twin and a 4ft 'cupboard' bed ideal for two youngsters) boast contemporary takes on traditional Welsh blankets from Melin Tregwynt, and, from two of them, fabulous views across the Towy to Llanstephan and its Norman castle ruins. The two bright and airy bathrooms each feature large, inviting roll-top baths and gorgeous custom-blended toiletries made by Earth Pure using seaweed gathered locally. The upstairs bathroom also has stylish shower with addictive and distinctly modern water pressure! Parents will also appreciate modern facilities in the kitchen which boasts a huge SMEG oven, Bosch diswasher, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher, breadmaker and all the tools needed to knock up a special supper. In the sitting room a wood-burning stove, comfy leather armchair, squishy sofas and more lovely Welsh blankets make for a cosy and romantic vibe. Outside, the pretty garden is set around a wide, sheltered terrace.
The fact that the railway line and its steep bank runs between the beach and the houses in Ferryside robs this rural village a little of its 'picture-perfect' potential, although it is of course a major plus for those watching their carbon footprint. Hop over the railway bridge and you're met with a pretty stretch of wide sandy beach backed by wooded hills. Alternatively, jump on the train itself (the station is within 500yds of the house) and go boutique shopping in Llandeilo and Narbeth, or visit the family-friendly Victorian seaside resort of Tenby. On sunny days, a visit to nearby Pembrey Country Park is hard to beat thanks to its 8-mile long stretch of golden sandy beach (said to be one of Europe's best beaches) and excellent facilities for those with young children including a mini train, beach entertainers and cycle hire.
Don't miss the fabulous Sunday lunch at nearby Y Polyn gastro pub listed amongst the UK's Top 10 Sunday Lunches in The Times newspaper. For a romantic, child-free, evening out try The Cors in Laugharne.
