Garachico, Isla Baja, Tenerife (North). Nearest Airports: Los Rodeos Airport (45mins drive) or the Tenerife Reina Sofia (1hr 30mins)
Nowhere more deserves to be credited as ‘the other side of Tenerife’ than the chic Hotel San Roque. Set in the verdant north of the island within a short walk of the pretty harbour and cobbled streets of the old town of Garachico, its a world away from the sun and sangria south. The hotel was a grand 18th century home for a wealthy descendent of the town’s founder but was recently renovated by the friendly Carayon family who clearly have an eye for design and have carefully contrasted original, ornate features with stunning modern styling to harmonious effect. Grand and elegant architecture reminds guests of the San Roque’s historic heritage whilst striking works of contemporary art and design classics provide interesting features at every turn. The hotel certainly oozes chic sophistication but so effortlessly that guests feel entirely relaxed and at ease.

Fans of art and design are in for a real treat at the San Roque. Gallery owner, Jose Luis Adelantado has built up an impressive collection of works of art by reputed contemporary artists from Spain and the Canaries which can be spotted all around the hotel, but also sculptures and furnishings from the Bauhaus movement and Glasgow school of designers. An awesome sculpture by Mikel Navarro dominates the main courtyard and you may find yourself relaxing on an original Macintosh or Corbousier chair. The artwork is in the bedrooms too, with each of the 20 rooms and suites individually designed using different colour schemes but the same high spec, including air con, Jacuzzi bath, minibar, satellite TV, CD, DVD and video player, complimentary robe and slippers. Guests can also indulge with in-room massages. The best room in the house is the restored watchtower, La Torre, split over 3 floors and with a private sun terrace offering spectacular views. A stunning option for a honeymoon or romantic retreat. The heated swimming pool is carved from volcanic lava rock and a rooftop sun terrace provides panoramic views over the Garachico coast and to snow-capped Mount Tiede in the distance. Catalonian chef, Pep Nogué cooks a daily changing menu exclusively for hotel guests in the restaurant and the Hoffmann Bar boasts an impressive selection of liqueurs and spirits from around the world.
A world away from the English bars and beaches of the Playa de las Americas, San Roque is found on the north western corner of the island in an area of wilder beauty, where dramatic mountains meet the Atlantic waves. Along with Los Silos, El Tanque and Buenavista, the harbour town of Garachico completes a cluster of traditional Tenerife towns which have retained their authentic atmosphere and offer a choice of restaurants and bars on the sea front and around the plaza. Hiking and mountain biking are popular in the area and a short steep walk from the hotel brings you to the pretty town of San Juan Del Reparo with views over Garachico below. The volcanic rock pools around the coast are warm and inviting for bathers whilst divers can explore underwater caves. 10 minutes drive from the San Roque, the 18-hole Buenavista Golf Club, designed by Seve Ballesteros, boasts a fabulous panoramic course, between the Teno mountain range and the sea, with reservations and discounted rates available at the hotel. For a breathtaking sunset, head to the Punto de Teno.
